There are dozens of brands of emergency contraceptive pills (also known as "morning after pills" or "day after pills") available around the world. These pills are hormonal contraceptives that are approved, packaged, and sold specifically for use as emergency contraception. The list below shows the name and type of each pill, the company that makes it, and the countries where it is available. Even if you can’t get one of the brands of pills that are sold specifically for emergency contraception, you can still use a different dose of many daily birth control pills to prevent pregnancy after sex.

§ In the US, Plan B One-Step and Next Choice are available without prescription to women and men aged 17 and older. Younger women still need a prescription. Plan B (the original 2-pill formualtion) is available without prescription to women and men 18 and older, but younger women still need a prescription. In some states, younger women can get emergency contraceptive pills directly from pharmacists without a doctor's prescription (these states are Alaska, California, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Washington State, and Vermont). §§ Plan B is now available over the counter in most provinces in Canada.  However, in British Columbia, Quebec and Saskatchewan, Plan B is sold behind the counter and must be requested from a pharmacist.
